Excerpt from the December 2005 New Knoxville Village Voice

NEW KNOXVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The “ big egg” has hatched in this on going Ranger and Cardinal saga!!  All the Ranger fans are content with having the Cardinal (New Bremen First National Bank) on Main Street.  It is a great feeling for Ranger business fans to move from Fifth Third to First National.  Now we Rangers are patiently awaiting for the new Cardinal business structure to be erected.  In the meantime this area rivalry will certainly continue in the “ball business” as it has in the past!

The New Knoxville Historical Society is very thankful to have received memorial contributions in memory of R. J. Stauffer and Martha Meckstroth.  Another significant memorial to Elmer and Mildred Henschen was received recently.  The informative “George Kattman 1936 New Knoxville History” book was reproduced in memory of the Henschens.  The 105 pages of stories and pictures contained in this book is the most interesting complete story available of the first 100 years of New Knoxville and the rural surrounding community.  This heritage book is available for only $10.00.  Your society also has a new shipment of afghans of a new design to compliment the first commemorative afghan.  Either the book or afghan would make wonderful seasonal gifts.  Contact any officer or the library for these and other heritage items for sale.  Or you can use the societies’ email address at:  nkhist@nktelco.net  to order these gifts, more society information or plan and schedule a museum visit.

The search and preservation of our communities’ heritage is never ending.  Recently the museum acquired two wagon box sideboards that clearly say “Sold and Warranted by “Detgan Grain Co.” – New Knoxville, Ohio”.  Detgen is misspelled but it looks “correct” when the German pronunciation is used.  This farm business existed for nearly 40 years at the Auglaize Coop, now located at North Main Street.  The wife of Henry Detgen, founder of Detgen Grain Co. in Moulton, was the younger sister of Dr. Henry Fledderjohann. Dr. Fledderjohann’s property is now the site of the NKHS Museum.

Your Society officers and trustees are always on the “hunt” for small artifacts and especially old pictures relating to our community rural life history and heritage.

Our very best Holiday Greetings and Best Wishes to all our museum visitors, supporters, and other community organizations.    Directed all in the best interest of promoting and improving New Knoxville, Ohio  USA in 2006!!
